Ankpa Fed. Constituency: The Sincere Endorsement That Gripped the Unprepared

By Abu Micheal.

... How Hon. Umar Yahaya’s organic popularity, verifiable projects, and cross-party appeal are reshaping the race for Ankpa House of Reps seat

Politics in Ankpa Federal Constituency took a decisive turn last weekend when the Legacy Group, a network of notable Omala indigenes at home and in the diaspora, endorsed Hon. Umar Yahaya, Member Representing Omala State Constituency, for the Ankpa Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

Ordinarily, an endorsement for Hon. Yahaya, popularly called “Connect”, should not unsettle anyone. His accomplishments remain unchallenged by past political office holders and representatives.

His popularity is organically driven, a rare support base he earned even before becoming a lawmaker. So when the Legacy Group adopted him, it did not come as a surprise to constituents who have tracked his trajectory.

A Footprint That Predates Office

Hon. Umar’s footprint in the lives of women, youths, and students is not hidden. His empowerment of farmers is well known across Omala, Olamaboro, and Ankpa LGAs. Ill

In infrastructure, he has built and is still building hospitals in Omala, a development stakeholders describe as “a game changer” for rural healthcare.

Water-borne diseases associated with untreated water, long a silent killer in riverine wards, are set to become history with his sinking of motorized boreholes in all the wards.

From health to water, Security building Police Station, education to agriculture, constituents say his interventions are visible, verifiable, and directly tied to daily survival.

“Before Hon. Umar, we drank from the same stream with cattle,” said Mama Aisha Ibrahim, a trader in Abejukolo. “Today we have clean water at our doorstep. If that is not representation, then what is it?”

The Endorsement and the Pushback

The Legacy Group’s endorsement, however, triggered swift pushback from a section of party executives who sought to debunk it. To discerning observers, the move was “laughable.” As one political analyst noted, conscience appeared sold for a pottage by those who were coaxed to discredit a group exercising its democratic right.

The irony, many argue, is that across Kogi State and Nigeria, several non-APC groups have endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Usman Ahmed Ododo without APC executives debunking them. It is trite knowledge that no party executive alone can deliver a candidate; winning requires reaching outside card-carrying members.

“The hue and cries by the supposed debunkers of Hon. Umar Yahaya are all but a fluke,” said Dr. John Ameh, a public affairs commentator in Ankpa. “When a politician becomes a movement, traditional power blocs panic. What we saw was not opposition, it was fear.”

Why ‘Connect’ Is Connecting

Party insiders say the fear is not unfounded. Juxtapose the accomplishments of Hon. Umar with those jittery about his rising profile, and the gap becomes obvious. His style of service has attracted endorsements from groups who feel impacted positively, many of whom are not APC members.

That cross-party appeal is why serious-minded stakeholders have already narrowed the 2027 race to “Hon. Umar vs the others.”

“His popularity is not purchased, it is earned,” declared Comrade Danlami Usman, Youth Coordinator, Omala Progress Forum.

“He was ‘Connect’ before politics because he connects people to solutions. Abuja needs that kind of man.”

Beyond Omala: A Federal Outlook

If elected, Hon. Yahaya is projected to be a match for ranking lawmakers, associates say, because he carries deliberate intentions to serve in a patriotic manner.

His legislative priorities, according to policy notes shared by his team, include rural health insurance cover, federal intervention for Ankpa–Abejukolo–Bagana road, mechanized farm clusters for Ankpa federal Constituency farmers, and a constituency-wide solar mini-grid to power schools and primary health centres.

His background and budget literacy are touted as assets for oversight and lobbying.

“Ankpa Federal Constituency does not need a learner,” said Hajia Fatima Ogwu, Women Leader, Olamaboro. “We need someone who can read a line item and argue it down for our people. Umar has done it at the state level. He will do more in Abuja.”

The Theatrics vs The Track Record

Constituents who claim to see through the “trick” playing out have laughed at the theatrics of those opposed to the endorsement, urging them to “hide their heads in shame.” The argument is simple: you cannot debunk impact. Motorized boreholes are running. Hospitals are standing. Farmers have inputs. Students have support. In the court of public opinion, those are exhibits that cannot be struck out.

“Let them bring their scorecards,” challenged Pastor Michael Edime, Igala Unity Coalition. “We will place them side by side with Hon. Umar’s and ask the people to judge. That is democracy.”

2027 Calculus: Umar vs The Others

As it currently stands, while everyone has a right to aspire, the political math in Ankpa Federal Constituency is tilting. With Legacy Group’s adoption and more groups signaling intent to follow, Hon. Umar Yahaya is projected to win massively at both party primary and general election levels.

His nickname, “Connect,” has become prophecy. Groups that have adopted him and others that will do so in the coming days are not acting on impulse, but on evidence.

The Verdict on the Ground

For many in Ankpa Federal Constituency, the endorsement is not just about 2027. It is about rewarding a model of representation that is purposeful, peaceful, and prosperity driven. It is about sending a lawmaker who understands that politics is not about the next election, but the next generation.

“Hon. Umar is the best thing that will happen to Ankpa Fed. Constituency if elected,” said Engr. Ladi Ademu, diaspora member of Legacy Group. “He has native intelligence, intellectual acumen, and sincere service. Unlike the average Nigerian politician, Connect is a rare breed politician.”

The race is on. But on the streets of Ankpa, Abejukolo, and Olamaboro, one phrase dominates: “Connect has connected already.”
