KONGONET Calls for Dialogue in Disability Employment Dispute at CUSTECH
The Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET), the umbrella body of civil society organizations in Kogi State, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing crisis between the Association of Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) and the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara.
The dispute, which stems from allegations of employment marginalization and non-compliance with disability inclusion laws, has raised tensions in the state.
In a statement signed by its Chairperson, Hamza Aliyu, KONGONET described the situation as “disturbing,” citing the apparent disregard for established disability rights frameworks.
The group reminded stakeholders that the *Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018*, guarantees equal opportunities in employment, education, health, and access to public services. It also noted that the Kogi State Disability Rights Law, which aligns with the federal legislation, affirms the rights of PWDs to fair representation and inclusion in state institutions.
“The continued neglect of these provisions undermines both the dignity of citizens and the credibility of governance processes,” the statement read.
While acknowledging the frustrations of PWDs, KONGONET urged protesters to channel grievances lawfully and peacefully, warning against actions that infringe on the rights and freedoms of others.
The network called on the Kogi State Government to:
1. Prioritize dialogue and mediation as the most effective way to resolve the dispute.
2. Reaffirm commitment to implementing both the National Disability Act (2018) and the Kogi State Disability Rights Law.
3. Establish a clear and inclusive framework for the recruitment of PWDs in line with statutory provisions.
4. Strengthen engagement platforms between government institutions and disability advocacy groups to prevent future conflicts.
KONGONET emphasized that peaceful dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to the rule of law remain the cornerstones for resolving the crisis.
