The Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu (FUAHSE), has once again positioned itself at the forefront of global intellectual engagement as it hosted scholars, researchers, healthcare professionals, industry experts, policymakers, innovators, professional bodies and strategic partners from Nigeria and beyond at the 2nd International Multidisciplinary Conference on Arts, Health Science, Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Systems (AHIAISE 2026).

Held under the compelling theme, “Integrating Arts and Sciences for National Development,” the international conference provided a dynamic platform for participants to exchange knowledge, present cutting-edge research, explore emerging technologies and deliberate on innovative and sustainable solutions to pressing national and global challenges.

The conference, which attracted participants both physically and virtually from different parts of the world, underscored FUAHSE's growing profile as an emerging centre of excellence in healthcare education, interdisciplinary research, innovation and sustainable development.

Welcoming delegates to the landmark gathering, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. John Emaimo, emphasized FUAHSE's commitment to excellence in healthcare education, research, innovation and community service.

Prof. Emaimo noted that the objectives of AHIAISE 2026 were closely aligned with the University's institutional vision, particularly its commitment to advancing knowledge and developing innovative solutions to emerging challenges in healthcare, technology, sustainability and society.

According to him, the convergence of health sciences, artificial intelligence, sustainable systems, creative innovation and emerging technologies offers a significant opportunity to tackle complex healthcare and societal challenges.

He stressed that the conference provides a strategic platform for knowledge exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of solutions capable of making meaningful impact on humanity, while encouraging delegates to establish lasting partnerships that would extend beyond the conference.

The Vice Chancellor's welcome address further reinforced the University's broader mandate of producing highly skilled allied health professionals, advancing research excellence and promoting innovation capable of transforming healthcare delivery and improving health outcomes at local, national and global levels.

The Co-General Chair of AHIAISE 2026, Rev. Sr. Dr. Henrietta Onyinye Uzoeto, described the conference as a critical platform for connecting people, fostering collaboration and sharing knowledge towards solving societal challenges.

She highlighted the international character of the gathering, noting the participation of scholars and speakers from more than seven countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Taiwan and South Africa.

Dr. Uzoeto explained that such international engagement would create new opportunities for research partnerships and knowledge exchange, while significantly enhancing the global visibility of the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu.

She noted that the conference would enable participants to access research from different parts of the world and establish meaningful collaborations capable of addressing challenges within their respective communities and beyond.

The General Chair of AHIAISE 2026, Prof. Kennedy Chinedu Okafor, described the gathering as a premier international multidisciplinary forum bringing together scholars, researchers, healthcare professionals, engineers, technologists, policymakers and innovators to exchange knowledge and showcase transformative research.

Prof. Okafor stressed the urgent need for interdisciplinary and evidence-based approaches to addressing contemporary challenges, including healthcare transformation, climate change, artificial intelligence, digital innovation and sustainable development.

The Conference Manager, Dr. Adaora Obayi, a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, emphasized the need for society to continually adapt to the rapidly changing technological landscape, particularly the emergence and expanding influence of artificial intelligence.

She explained that AHIAISE 2026 was uniquely conceived to bring the arts and sciences together, recognizing that sustainable national development requires collaboration across disciplines rather than isolated approaches.

Dr. Obayi noted that AI has come to stay and can be applied across virtually every sphere of human endeavour to improve productivity, services and quality of life.

However, she cautioned that artificial intelligence should be regarded as a tool designed to assist and empower humanity rather than replace it. She therefore urged participants and society at large to embrace, harness and responsibly deploy AI for the collective advancement of humanity.

Among the distinguished speakers was Prof. Andrew Haruna, who delivered a presentation titled “Healing Beyond the Hospital: Integrating Arts, Humanities and Medical Sciences for Sustainable Systems in Nigeria.”

Also featured was Prof. Arthur Ekwue of Brunel University of London, United Kingdom, who addressed the critical subject of “Towards Sustainable Development of Talent in Africa.”

From the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, Prof. Omowunmi Mary Longe presented insights on “Smart Solar-Powered LED for Improved Lighting, Heart Health, and Academic Performance.”

Another distinguished resource person, Dr. Chioma Masi Onoshakpor of Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom, focused on “Human-Centred AI and Inclusive Innovation for Sustainable National Development.”

One of the participants, Dr. Livinus Abonye, Associate Professor of Radiography and Acting Dean, Faculty of Healthcare Services, Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu, described the conference as a significant platform for global scientists and researchers to explore the transformative potential of arts, health sciences, artificial intelligence and sustainable development.

Dr. Abonye highlighted discussions on the application of AI in healthcare, disease diagnosis and treatment, agriculture, energy sustainability and technological development.
