Police Launch Probe into Viral Assault Incident in Iffe, Kogi State

The Kogi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a viral video circulating on social media over an incident that occurred in Iffe, Ijumu Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday.

According to the statement, preliminary findings revealed that on March 8, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m., one Medaiyese Boye of Iffe Community reported at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ekinrin-Adde in a visibly battered and bloodied condition, alleging that he was being assaulted by some individuals in the community.

The victim also alleged that the same group was still attacking his father at the time he made the report.

“Based on the report, a police patrol team led by the Divisional Police Officer immediately mobilised to the scene. However, upon arrival, the officers encountered a group of individuals who had already gathered at the location and began pelting stones at the police team and their patrol vehicle in an attempt to mob the officers and possibly snatch their arms,” the statement said.

The Command described the attack on officers performing their lawful duties as a serious offence and vowed to ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.

“In the process of safely disengaging from the scene and dispersing the violent crowd, the patrol team deployed tear gas. The police team, however, successfully rescued the victim who was being assaulted,” it added.

The statement also noted that the Command was aware of a narrative and photograph circulating online showing an injured woman, but said the exact circumstances surrounding her injury could not immediately be ascertained due to the chaotic nature of the incident.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, **Naziru Bello Kankarofi**, has directed a thorough investigation into the matter. The probe will be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Command said some individuals connected with the case had already been invited for questioning as part of efforts to establish the facts and ensure due process.

It assured members of the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally and transparently, adding that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.

The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order in the state and urged residents to remain calm while allowing the investigation to run its course.
