5th Convocation: Gov. Ododo Reaffirms Commitment to Quality Tertiary Education in Kogi

Kogi State Governor and Visitor to Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to quality education, academic stability and sustained investment in tertiary institutions across the state.

Governor Ododo made this known at the 5th Combined Convocation Ceremony of the Polytechnic held on Saturday. He was represented at the event by his Deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu. The governor described education as the most reliable pathway to personal advancement and sustainable development, noting that Kogi State Polytechnic remains a critical driver of technical skills and human capital development in the state.

He commended the Governing Council, Management and staff of the institution for restoring academic regularity, pointing out the remarkable improvement from the past practice of combining up to ten graduating sets to just two sets this year. According to him, this development is a clear indication of academic stability and effective leadership.

The governor congratulated the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 graduands for their perseverance and resilience, urging them to uphold the values of the institution and serve as worthy ambassadors wherever they find themselves.

Governor Ododo outlined several interventions by his administration at the Polytechnic, including the installation of solar-powered streetlights, fencing of the Itakpe Campus, deployment of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, improved staff welfare through the implementation of the new minimum wage and health insurance scheme, as well as sustained bursary support for students.

He also acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for their continued contributions to infrastructural development and academic advancement in the institution.

The governor further disclosed that all programmes of the Polytechnic now enjoy full accreditation, with the introduction of 19 new academic programmes designed to meet the demands of the modern workforce. He also highlighted the completion of key projects, including a 1,000-seat lecture theatre that had been abandoned for over 16 years.

Governor Ododo urged members of the Polytechnic community to support the new leadership and reiterated his administration’s vision to position the institution as a hub for innovation, skills acquisition and industrial excellence. He reaffirmed his government’s resolve to continue prioritising education as the foundation for the state’s development.

Earlier in his address, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, outlined significant improvements in infrastructure, academics, staff and student welfare, as well as campus security under his leadership. He said that upon assuming office, he pledged to leave the institution better than he met it, expressing gratitude to God, the state government and the Polytechnic Management for their support in achieving the recorded milestones.

The Rector appealed for continued government intervention in the implementation of staff promotions from 2023 to date, the construction of additional student hostels, and the sustained payment of academic earned allowances, among other needs.

The highlight of the event was the commissioning of several key projects by the Deputy Governor on behalf of Governor Ododo. These included the School of Preliminary Studies, Lecture Hall 3 at Itakpe, the Itakpe Campus Fence Project, the 1,000-seat Lecture Theatre, the Office Technology and Management Building, the Computer-Based Test (CBT) Extension, and the School of Communication Building.

The ceremony also featured the conferment of Fellowship Awards on Governor Ododo, former Governor Abubakar Audu, the State Accountant-General, Dr. Habibat Oyiza Tijani Onumoko, and other distinguished individuals by the Polytechnic Management, in recognition of their outstanding contributions and lasting impact on the growth of the institution.
