Kogi State Ministry of Justice leads the charge for improved justice delivery with successful conclusion of two-day seminar

The Kogi State Ministry of Justice recently concluded a highly productive two-day seminar with the theme "Prospects and Challenges of the Kogi State Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL), 2017: Charting a Way Forward." Held on the 23rd and 24th of July 2025 at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Lokoja, key stakeholders in the criminal justice sector converged to evaluate the implementation of the ACJL, identify challenges, and propose solutions for enhanced justice delivery in the state.

The seminar kicked off with an opening ceremony graced by distinguished figures in the justice sector, including Hon. Justice J.J. Majebi, Chief Judge of Kogi State, High Court Judges, law officers from the Ministry of Justice, and representatives from various security agencies. The welcome address was delivered by the Solicitor General/Permanent Secretary, Hajia Falilat Yusuf, highlighting the significance of the seminar in fortifying the justice system.

In his keynote address, the Honourable Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice, Muizudeen Yunus Abdullahi, SAN, underscored the necessity for collaboration among the Judiciary, Police, and Ministry of Justice to ensure the seamless administration of criminal justice.

He emphasized the pivotal role of the ACJL (2017) in promoting efficiency, fairness, and swift dispensation of justice, while also acknowledging the existing challenges that need immediate attention.

Throughout the seminar, seasoned legal experts presented insightful papers on critical topics such as plea bargaining, remand proceedings, and obtaining extra-judicial statements from suspects. The discussions delved deep into the successes and areas needing reform under the ACJL (2017), with a particular focus on standardizing the application of plea bargaining and ensuring compliance with human rights standards.

In his closing remarks, the Honourable Attorney General expressed gratitude to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his steadfast support to the Ministry of Justice and dedication to enhancing justice delivery in Kogi State.

He praised the Governor's commitment to initiatives that strengthen the rule of law and improve access to justice for all citizens.

The seminar concluded on a high note, with participants leaving equipped with renewed strategies to tackle challenges and enhance the implementation of the ACJL (2017). The Ministry of Justice reiterated its commitment to ongoing engagement with stakeholders to create a more efficient, fair, and people-centered criminal justice system in Kogi State.

The successful conclusion of the seminar marks a significant step towards achieving these goals and furthering the cause of justice in the state.
