Bunu Development Association Spearheads Progress and Security Initiative at National Congress

In a historic gathering of Bunu's esteemed leaders and stakeholders, the Bunu Development Association (BDA) culminated its National Congress on Saturday, 28th June 2025, at the illustrious Civic Centre in Iluke Bunu, Kogi State. Facilitated by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the BDA, the congress proved to be a defining moment in shaping the destiny of Bunu land.

Navigating through a landscape fraught with security challenges and infrastructural deficiencies, the Congress engaged in profound deliberations that yielded groundbreaking resolutions geared towards fostering progress and harmony within the community.

Notable milestones included an exhaustive review of the BDA's stewardship spanning the last four years, a heartfelt tribute to fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight against banditry, and a commendation of governmental initiatives aimed at bolstering security infrastructure.

Of particular significance was the BDA's resolute opposition to the unlawful appropriation of communal lands by herders, staunchly advocating for the preservation of Bunu's ancestral heritage. The Congress further championed the establishment of a proactive security hub in Iluke-Bunu to fortify defensive capabilities in the area.

Additionally, poignant discussions centered around the imperative need for infrastructural development, underscoring the urgency for enhanced roads, electricity, and public facilities to elevate Bunu land to par with neighboring districts.

An impassioned call for tranquility, vigilance, and collaborative effort among Bunu's youth underscored the pivotal role of community engagement in safeguarding a secure environment for all denizens. The BDA extended heartfelt appreciation to the Iluke community for their gracious hospitality in hosting the Congress.

As the Congress drew to a close, an unwavering sense of solidarity, fortitude, and resolve imbued the atmosphere, heralding a new chapter of advancement and prosperity for Bunu land.

Embodying the theme "Harnessing Our Strengths, Securing Our Future," the BDA's National Congress epitomized a collective dedication to transcending obstacles and forging a brighter legacy for future generations.

COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE BUNU DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION (BDA) NATIONAL CONGRESS HELD ON SATURDAY, 28TH JUNE, 2025, AT THE CIVIC CENTRE, ILUKE BUNU, KOGI STATE

The Bunu Development Association (BDA) convened its much-anticipated National Congress on Saturday, 28th June, 2025, at the Civic Centre, Iluke Bunu. The congress was organized by the National Executive Council (NEC) of BDA to present a comprehensive account of its stewardship over the past four years. It served as a platform for reflection, dialogue, and the collective charting of a new course for Bunu land.

The meeting was graced by a cross-section of dignitaries and stakeholders, including Royal Fathers, Presidents and Secretaries of various Community Development Associations (CDAs), respected Bunu elders, , security operatives, and other patriotic sons and daughters of Bunu.

After extensive deliberations on matters bordering on community security, development, unity, and leadership, the following resolutions were reached:

1  .Stewardship Presentation:
The National Executive Council of the BDA delivered a detailed presentation of its stewardship over the last four years. The report captured achievements across critical areas, challenges faced, and plans for the next phase of development. The congress applauded the council for its transparency, dedication, and progressive vision.

2.  Tribute to Fallen Heroes: A solemn one-minute silence was observed in honour of the late gallant son of Bunu land, Rtd. Major Ajayi, and other compatriots who lost their lives to banditry and insecurity in the area. Their bravery and sacrifices were acknowledged as acts of ultimate patriotism, and their memories remain evergreen in the hearts of the people.

3.  Commendation of Government Efforts:
The Association expressed appreciation to the Kogi State Government, under the  leadership of His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for providing critical security infrastructure including Hilux operational vehicles, motorcycles, and other logistics I the area. These resources have greatly boosted the morale and effectiveness of security operatives in tackling the menace of insecurity. The BDA, however, strongly appealed to the State Government to intensify rescue operations and ensure the safe return of the four kidnapped victims from Aiyetoro-Kiri and others , whose plight remains a source of collective pain.

4.  Appreciation to Security Forces and Vigilante Groups:
The Congress acknowledged the relentless and courageous efforts of the formal security agencies and local vigilante groups across Bunu land.  Their sacrifices, especially under difficult conditions, have been pivotal in safeguarding the lives and properties of the people. The BDA called for continued cooperation and support for these forces.
We also sympathise with the families of the security personnels  that paid the supreme price while combating these criminal elements. 

5.  Call for Calm and Vigilance Among Youth:
The Association urged Bunu youths to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and vigilant in the face of growing security threats. They are encouraged to promptly report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

6.  Establishment and Support for Community Vigilantes:
The Congress emphasized the urgent need for all Bunu communities to establish and strengthen local vigilante outfits to complement existing security structures. The BDA pledged its full support  such initiatives aimed at improving grassroots surveillance and response to emerging threats.

7.  Rejection of  Land Allocation to Herders:
The BDA strongly condemned the illegal allocation or sales of community lands to herders. The Congress resolved that any such act will be firmly resisted and duly reported to government authorities to protect the ancestral lands of Bunu people.

8.  Appeal for Forward Base Security Architecture:
The Association called on the Kogi State Government to expedite the establishment of a forward operating base at Iluke-Bunu, particularly for the Ilah–Iluke–Kiri axis.  Such proactive architecture will serve as a deterrent to banditry and a response hub for emergencies.

9.  Advocacy for Infrastructure Development:
The BDA drew the attention of the government to the gross infrastructural deficit across Bunu land. Roads are largely dilapidated, electricity is either absent or epileptic, and the general state of public amenities lags far behind that of other districts. The Association urged the government to adopt a more inclusive development strategy that reflects equity and fairness for the Bunu the Bunu people

10. The congress called for maximum cooperation of all Bunu sons, daughters and well wishers towards the Centenary anniversary for His Royal majesty, the Olubunu of Bunu land coming up July 20th, 2025.


11.  Gratitude to Iluke Community:
The Congress expressed heartfelt appreciation to His Royal Highness, the Olu of Iluke, and the Iluke community at large for their magnanimous gesture in allocating a parcel of land for the construction of the BDA Secretariat. This gesture is seen as a great act of commitment to the unity and institutional strengthening of the Association.

12.  Affirmation of the Current Executive Council:
In recognition of their outstanding leadership, integrity, and service delivery, the Congress unanimously affirmed the re-election of the current National Executive Council of BDA for a second term in office. The affirmed officers are as follows:
